For example, if you adjust metadata in Lightroom, it updates nearly instantly in PhotoLab 5. PhotoLab 5 processes IPTC and EXIF data and syncs with third-party applications. It can also sync metadata changes via third-party applications.ĭxO PhotoLab is more than a photo editor. On Windows, the performance gains are still impressive, with PhotoLab 5's DeepPRIME operating about 1.5x faster.ĭxO PhotoLab 5 includes improved metadata viewing on the right side of the workspace. On Apple Silicon-equipped Macs, it is up to 4x faster than the previous iteration. DxO PhotoLab 5's implementation of DeepPRIME has undergone significant optimization. Unlike traditional RAW processing tools, which perform noise reduction and demosaicing at two separate steps, DeepPRIME uses a holistic approach to perform the tasks simultaneously, resulting in images that promise more detail and lower noise. The compressor type and settings aren't critical, but I tend to use a ratio of around 4:1, a fast attack and a release time of about 200 to 400 ms. Of course, the aux send control of your source track controls the level feeding into the compressor, and thus how much signal crosses the compressor threshold, so it's usually best to leave the send at its unity gain position and adjust the amount of added shimmer using the aux bus (effects return) track's level fader. The Long Washįor the shimmer chain - which, as I said in passing, should be set up as a send effect - you can again start with pretty much any compressor. There's also the option of panning this 'dry' track to one side and the shimmer send bus to the other, which can create a bigger stereo panorama, which is sometimes what you want, and sometimes not. Either use an auto release or set it to around 200ms for slowly played parts. Add just enough gain reduction (typically 6dB or thereabouts) to soften the note. The effects used by Paul for the DIY shimmer effect he describes in the main text.If you're working with a clean, DI'd electric guitar, try putting a compressor at the start of the track's plug‑in chain - this will help even things up, and if the note attack is too 'pingy', reduce the compressor attack time until it is suitably tamed. (Without such delay and/or reverb effects, I find the dry part of the sound can seem rather too separate from the shimmer reverb tail.) Pretty much any basic reverb and a delay plug‑in that also includes variable filters will work for this part of the job. Treating The 'Dry' Pathīy way of insert effects on the main source track, I like to add a little reverb plus some quarter-note tape-style delay, with the top rolled off down to maybe 1.2kHz to make the repeats sit nicely behind the main sound. The best place to start, of course, is with the plug‑ins you already have - not least your own DAW's bundled collection. Using a rotary speaker emulation, on the other hand, will give you something more akin to (surprise, surprise!) an organ sound.Īs a Logic Pro user, I have my own template for the shimmer effect that uses only Logic's built-in plug‑ins, and you can download a Zip file of that above. But I realise that many of you use other DAWs, so in this article I'll try to suggest third-party plug‑ins that will work well. To reinforce the pseudo-strings effect, try adding modulation to the shimmer sound using a subtle chorus or ensemble plug‑in. But it's also helpful to place a compressor before the pitch-shifter - this can help to keep up the level and density of the reverb tail, creating something akin to a pad or string machine sound. The two key components of the shimmer effect are octave-up pitch shifting and a suitably long and washy reverb. Some shimmer pedal designs also incorporate a little feedback from the output of the reverb back to the input, and this configuration makes replicating that trickier in most DAWs, but I've found that this step is usually unnecessary anyway. Taking the basic shimmer effect first, this is best set up as a send effect, as this allows you to use different processing to the dry part of the sound, such as a more conventional reverb and/or delay. But you can also set up your own variation on the shimmer effect using plug‑ins that most of us already have. An inexpensive software option is the excellent Valhalla Shimmer plug‑in. Numerous reverb pedals now include a shimmer effect, but those that do it well don't come cheap. Guitar players often combine this effect with a slow fade-in to the note, which can be achieved using a volume pedal, a little finger wrapped around the guitar's volume knob, or a dedicated slow-attack pedal, such as the EHX Attack Decay that we reviewed in SOS July 2019 ( ). One of the staples of ambient music is the so-called shimmer reverb effect, in which each note is followed by a reverberant wash of sound an octave higher than the original. For more instant gratification, you could try a commercial plug‑in such as Valhalla Shimmer!Ĭreating your own shimmer reverb effects is easy, and gives you plenty of creative control. This name was applied to the LCD screen of the iPhone XR. The HD and Super HD labels are earned with a higher resolution. Note that these extended versions of the retina are not necessarily defined by the pixel density/distance equation in the same way as the retina itself: You will find that the Retina HD iPhone 6, 7 and 8 all have 326ppi screens, just like the normal Retina iPhone 5 and 5s. The same name applies to the iPhone XS and XS Max. With its 5.8-inch, 2436 x 1125, 458ppi screen, the X was considered the latest version of the Retina branding: Super Retina HD. This label continued into 2017 up to and including iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.īut with the arrival of iPhone X shortly after the 8-generation smartphones, Apple went one step further. iPhone 6 Plus has a vertical resolution of 1080 pixels, exactly the number of pixels needed for the higher of the two HD video standards.Īpple has awarded the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus with the Retina HD label. When iPhone 6 came out in 2014, it had a vertical resolution of 750 pixels, slightly more than the 720 pixel vertical resolution that is one of the standards for HD video. What’s the next step? How do you describe a screen that’s even better? Apple’s answer was to adopt terminology from the video and broadcast industries. Steve Jobs drew Apple into a corner when he described the pixels on iPhone 4 as imperceptible to the human eye. The text in particular benefits from retina – it looks smoother, with the curves on the characters looking like curves rather than jagged steps. The effect of a retina display is that everything looks clearer. How does a retina display differ from a non retina display? To compensate for this, Apple has developed the so-called HiDPI mode, in which each UI element is twice as large vertically and horizontally, and thus the same size as on a non-Retina display. User interface elements such as menus and icons would look tiny. If they did that and nothing else, however, there would be a problem. Simply put, Apple converts a device’s display to retina by doubling the number of pixels vertically and horizontally, which means it has four times as many pixels as its non-retina counterpart. So you can see that everything is a little vague – but the rough idea is that a screen is classified as retina when it’s sharp enough that the human eye can’t see individual pixels at a typical usage distance. But it qualifies as a retina because you’re sitting further away from a laptop screen. iPhone X, XS and XS Max have a pixel density of 458ppi.īut look at the 13 MacBook Pro and its screen has a density of only 227ppi. In general, the larger the screen, the further away your eyes are likely to be from it and the lower the pixel density required to “qualify” as a retina display.įor example, iPhone 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 all have screens with a pixel density of 326ppi, while the Plus versions have a higher density of 401ppi. The further away their eyes are from the screen, the lower the pixel density needed to make the pixels disappear. How can you call them all retina?īecause there are two crucial elements whether pixels are perceptible or not: density and distance. Some have pixel densities greater than 326ppi, others less. Since then, Apple has launched many more devices with retina displays. They don’t see any pixels, only the image that created them. When Steve Jobs launched iPhone 4, the first Retina display, he described it as a screen with so many pixels so close together (it was rated 326ppi – pixels per inch) that they were invisible to the human eye at a distance of 12 inches. The first and most important criterion is pixel density: the statistic that generally gives the best idea of the sharpness of a screen. We’ll give you an idea of whether retina displays are worth the price you pay. In the following article we will discuss Apple’s retina displays a little more closely. However, there are features that distinguish retina displays from non retina displays. Retina is an Apple brand term for which there is no concrete definition: Simply put, a Retina display is any screen developed by Apple. I love this name tracing generator because you can choose from multiple fonts. Or have them practice names of family members and friends! What Font Should I Use For Name Tracing? You could start with your kid’s first name, then move on to including the middle and last name. Then as they gain confidence in their writing you can make the letters smaller and include more lines. Too many can be overwhelming, plus the larger words are easier to trace for little ones. When you’re working with young children start with less repetitions. All you have to do is insert your child’s name and how many times you’d like the name repeated. These free name tracing worksheets for preschool are perfect for developing those beginner writing skills in kids. This writing worksheet generator replaces blank name tracing worksheets because you can finally customize them to say anything you want! How to Use Name Tracing Worksheets You can customize it with your child’s exact name (both first and last!) even if you use unique spelling. That’s where this name tracing worksheet generator works great. It would be impossible to create tracing name worksheets for each and every name like we do with other early words. Why Use a Name Tracing Worksheet Generator?ĭid you know that there are over five thousand popular first names in the US alone? That’s an awful lot of variation even if your child doesn’t have a super unique name. Personally, I love to use name tracing worksheets to help develop those early writing skills. When preschoolers are first learning name writing it’s important to make things really simple for them. That includes both identifying and writing a child’s name. Most children don’t need to be able to write well by the time they enter kindergarten but even preschool classes work on teaching name recognition. But, names can be so diverse! That’s why I’ve created this free editable name tracing worksheet printable so your child can practice writing their name.įree Editable Name Tracing Worksheet Practice Printable Not only is it an important early skill that they’ll use, it’s also something that they’ll want to practice. Kids all learn at different paces, but one of the best ways to start with writing is having your child practice their name. My old one man Cabelas is a little over two pounds heavier. For a solo hunt it gives plenty of room with without much weight. In two to three minutes you can have the tent up as long as the soil will hold the stakes. So I don't have much of a review other than the short stakes they have don't hold well in beach sand in the wind. After being on the river all day rowing I didn't feel up to searching for big rocks to tie to so opted to put the tent away and stay in one of the big staff tents. I usually take some mesh bags to fill with rocks and use in place of the tent stakes. I had to prep for the trip in such a rush that I neglected to bring any rock bags. I set the tent up and staked it down on the sand bar only to have the wind pull up all four stakes. I hope to get several opportunities this season to try it out. Only time and usage will tell how this tent performs. I'll post some pics once I get home and on my own computer. I'm not sure if they are aluminum or titanium but they are about 3/8" in diameter and 5" long. I am impressed with the stakes they provide with this tent. I'll just fill the bags with rocks and use them to tie out rather than the stakes. I'll have to have my wife whip up some small mesh bags with drawstrings so when I am in sheep country I won't have to worry about trying to get a stake in the ground. At 3 pounds 1 ounce for a three man tent I am getting a two pound reduction from my old one man tent. It has enough room for two guys without feeling cramped. It's way lighter than my old tent and can squeeze three in if needed. That's the primary reason I bought the tent. If I can get a fly in scheduled at this late date I will be doing a solo hunt for sheep in August. Usually we stay in big Cabela's expedition tents but I'll take the Cloudburst along to give it a try. I have to pilot a raft for a men's ministry trip on the Gulkana River. This trip Friday will be it's first usage. I was most impressed by the fact that it is an American made tent and is competitive with many of the imports for price. I am no backpacking expert but it seems to be very well made. I am pleased with the quality of the tent. Might help to keep my bag on the pad a little better. I'm going to do the same thing to my Thermarest pad when I get home. It is pretty slick and I can see sliding around without the stripes for a little traction. I took their advice and painted some silicone sealer stripes on the floor of the tent. They claim two to three minutes and I believe that's very doable with just a couple of practice runs. I managed to get the seam sealing done and dry before it rained. I set the tent up yesterday to seal the seams. Some famous bass riffs: “Money” by Pink Floyd, “Green Onions” by Booker T and the MGs, and the Beatles’ “Come Together.” Riff bass lines are particularly common rock and R&B styles. A bass riff is a repeated lick-that is, a short, melody-like figure. Walking bass lines are particularly common in jazz, boogie-woogie, and country styles. The steady quarter notes might be embellished with an occasional upbeat anticipation of just a third of a beat, to keep things moving. Beats 2 and be 4 are particularly likely to be points of tension, leading to resolution at beats 3 and beat 1 of the next measure. While beat 1 still usually has the chord root, there is a sense of motion and journeying for the line, as it strings together important tones of a chord progression. Beyond just chord tones, the diatonic scale may be used and supplemented with chromatic passing notes to help facilitate placing the intended target chord tone on the intended beat. When a bass “walks,” it plays time using a linear approach, moving primarily in even quarter notes, with a swing feel. Often, the term "playing time" is used in jazz contexts, as the antithesis of "stop time" (see below). Again, it tends to match the kick drum rhythms. This approach can take many forms, from repeated notes, to alternating roots and 5s, to walking bass lines. When a bass player “plays time,” every beat of the measure is articulated, rather than just playing long-duration notes. For a bass, there is no shame in simplicity. When the bass player pares down and focuses on “making the changes,” they are honing in on the most fundamental level of harmonic outlining-pure backbone stuff. A variation of long-duration notes is to play a pedal point, or one note through various chord changes.Ī bass part does not need to be particularly linear or distinctive simply sounding the root at each chord “change” is the core responsibility of the bass player, and thus, the most bass’s basic and critical function in a groove. So, in 4/4 meter, usually the bass plays the root on beat 1, and often the root, 5, or octave on beat 3. Most simply, the bass plays steady long-duration notes (whole notes, half notes., etc.), sounding chord tones on the strong beats of a measure, often coinciding with the simple rhythms played by the kick drum. In pretty much any contemporary groove-based style, the bass’s priority is to “make the changes,” or ground the tune’s harmonic structure.
